Rick and Melissa are a pair of young lovers hoping to get out of the slums for good and escape the poverty and crime their families and friends have gotten involved in. All this comes to an end when Rick feels he must rejoin his old gang to avenge the killing of his brother by a rival gang.
In the course of getting even, Rick is arrested, leaving Melissa without anyone to protect her. She falls in with a crack dealer and quickly becomes addicted to the drug. When she gets sold to a drug kingpin by a minor dealer to pay off a debt, only Rick can save her. Getting in is easy The imaginary faces and places created in comic books become our friends, and at the root of all this is aesthetics. If only someone had mentioned this to Victor Gorelick, vice president and longtime managing editor of the beloved Archie comics,.
Betty and Veronica. Archie comics may not be the most respected publication in the comic book world, but they've been around since , never failing to appeal to a loyal young audience. Set in the fictional picture-perfect suburb of Riverdale, the comic features Archie Andrews, the average American teenager, and his friends: self-absorbed Reggie Mantle, constantly snacking Jughead Jones, and of course, Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge, the middle-class blonde and the filthy rich brunette.
Betty is the girl-next-door, Veronica is the stuck-up vixen, and naturally, they're best friends. The twist: both girls are hopelessly in love with Archie, and Archie is torn between Betty's kindness and Veronica's legs. The members of the Riverdale gang are defined by their distinct personalities,. The illustration is cute, plain and simple. Archie wears timeless sweater vests and letterman jackets. He's got freckles and wavy hair, which is drawn with funky plaid pattern on the sides of his head.
Famous for his jaunty crown hat, Jughead's nose looks like a hot dog. But it is Betty and Veronica that are the crowning glory of the cartoon illustration, with their giant puppy eyes, pillowy pink lips, and cotton candy hair. Always smiling, they are cute, they are loveable, and they've got some serious sex appeal. Betty and Veronica have been ruined. In an effort to attract older readers, the apparently deranged folks at Archie comics decided to hire a new artist to redefine Betty and Veronica's look.
Now, thanks to cartoonist Steven Butler, the girls look like crack whores. Their faces are narrow and angular, their hair is stringy, their clothes are wrinkled -- basically, they look old and they look mean. Archie's innocent features are gone, replaced by a hunky face and a toned physique.
Nothing is cute, nothing is cheerful, and everything is ugly. The goal was to make the comic more realistic, but who reads Archie comics for a dose of reality? It's a cartoon world where all that matters is milkshakes at the diner and who your date for the big dance is, where everyone and everything is as cute as a button.
The redesign is a nightmare that's got Archie fans wiping tears from their eyes as they write angry Internet forum posts protesting the change.
